Efficent Fire Protection for Alternative Traction Technologies
Sustainable Solutions for Sustainable Mobility
As of 2023, approximately 80% of new locomotives globally are equipped with alternative propulsion technologies, such as battery-electric or hydrogen fuel cells.
In addition to the use of hybrid solutions (dual-system locomotives with diesel and electricity), which are represented by a combination of the aforementioned traction solutions, hydrogen and batteries are increasingly playing a significant role as energy storage systems. However, they also bring with them other risk elements and require a different approach in risk analysis.
Based on long-standing research and development activities, including in close collaboration with various German ministries, FOGTEC has developed new technologies and solutions for the application-specific detection of fire risks and incidents. New sensor generations have been combined with knowledge gained from thousands of fire tests involving the new energy sources, enabling a new, needs-based safety concept.
FAQ – Fire Protection in Alternative Traction
What are the main risks associated with hydrogen-powered locomotives?
The high flammability and low ignition energy of hydrogen
require particularly fast detection and a specific fire protection concept. Fogtec offers advanced solutions designed to address these unique safety requirementsHow does fire protection differ for battery-powered locomotives?
Batteries pose the risk of thermal runaway.
A combination of rapid detection and application-specific extinguishing agents is essential.Fogtec’s systems are engineered to detect early warning signs and suppress incidents efficiently. Can water mist also be used for alternative propulsion technologies?
Yes, water mist can be applied here as well,
but it must be adapted to the specific chemical and physical properties of the energy storage systems.
