Fire Protection for Technical Areas

Technical areas have always played a special role in risk assessment, particularly in connection with flammable liquids and high-voltage cabinets. While passenger compartment fire protection is often a matter of the overall concept within a mobility system and has a broad impact on evacuation and emergency plans, the risk in technical areas has already been reflected in norms and standards since a very long time. Material aging, failures in maintenance or manufacturing often play a role, which only become apparent at a later date. Since different scenarios for fire development must be considered in these cases, these risks must also be handled differently in fire detection and firefighting. Often, there is no direct danger to people in these areas, but such a fire event becomes a risk if it spreads unnoticed and develops to a dangerous level before detection.
An important basic rule for all technical areas is the shutdown of the power supply, as required by EN 45545, regardless of whether and which extinguishing agent is used.
