Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are gaining in popularity and are seeing exponential market growth. In these systems, a large amount of energy is stored in a small space by interconnecting a large number of individual cells. In the event of a fault, a single cell can lead to a thermal runaway and consequently to a rapid spread of fire throughout the entire energy storage system.
To protect these BESS, FOGTEC has developed a holistic protection concept. This includes early detection of the flammable and toxic battery gases that can escape in the event of a failure. The first actions we take when detecting these gases can possibly prevent a thermal runaway. More importantly, we want to keep the gases below the explosion level by activating the active ventilation of the energy storage system. This makes it unlikely that the storage system will explode.
If the thermal runaway of a cell does occur, our high-pressure water mist system and the excellent cooling it provides, together with minimal water usage, successfully prevents the propagation to other battery modules. This overall protection concept thus offers maximum protection while minimising environmental impact.
