As the third and final element of the FOGTEC protection concept for battery storage systems (BESS), we would like to take a closer look at firefighting.
As the SUVEREN (I+II) research projects have demonstrated, high-pressure water mist is particularly suitable for fighting battery fires due to its high cooling effect. The spread of the fire and thus the thermal runaway is effectively controlled by the cooling.
In the event of a fire, high-pressure pumps deliver pure water through stainless steel pipes to specially designed nozzles, which are positioned in the BESS according to the battery layout. The nozzles produce extremely fine droplets that are distributed throughout the room, effectively controlling the spread of fire.
No pre-warning time is required and firefighting can be initiated without delay. Smoke and flammable gases released during battery fires can be ventilated while the high-pressure water mist fights the fire and cools the battery casings. There is no need for a sealed room at any time.
