Even in the early stages of a battery cell malfunction, flammable and highly toxic gases are produced in the cell. If the pressure in the cell gets critical, these gases can escape abruptly from the cell. This event is one of the earliest ways to recognise a battery thermal runaway. With the detection system developed by FOGTEC, it is possible to detect even small amounts of off-gases and alert the operator about a thermal runaway.
This warning is used to take initial measures. Consequently, there is an chance of preventing a thermal runaway of the cell and at the same time counteracting the risk of explosion in the BESS by actively ventilating the system.
