India is developing its infrastructure at a rapid pace. One of the major projects currently underway is the Dwarka Expressway, which will link the cities of Dwarka and Gurugram, as well as Dwarka and the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Part of the project is the new Dwarka Tunnel, which will be the widest road tunnel in Asia with eight lanes.
A tunnel project at the heart of the Delhi region
With a length of around 3.6 kilometres, the Dwarka Tunnel will significantly improve traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks on the heavily congested National Highway 48. At the same time, the underground route and flat tunnel design will minimise the impact on the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
State of the art technology
The tunnel is not only a major traffic engineering project, but also a showcase for safety. The equipment includes
- A FOGTEC fixed fire suppression system (FFFS)
- Advanced ventilation and lighting systems for improved air quality and visibility
- Continuous video surveillance and public address systems for rapid notification in the event of an emergency
- Artistic wall design with special lighting to enhance the experience
Safety first – including fire safety
Fire prevention and firefighting are of particular importance. An innovative water mist fire suppression system from FOGTEC will be used, which not only detects and extinguishes fires quickly, but also minimises the use of water, thus reducing potential secondary damage. This system is a key component of the safety concept and is designed to save lives and protect the tunnel infrastructure in the event of an emergency.

The Dwarka Tunnel is already considered a benchmark for future tunnel projects in India, both in terms of traffic management and safety standards.
