Since 2003, FOGTEC systems have been continuously used in a wide variety of locomotives. In addition to providing traditional traction power, locomotives also have a special safety function, as they are often the sole source of traction. Maintaining traction and ensuring that the high concentration of power at a central location does not pose a potential hazard to the train and its passengers is of particular importance in locomotive-hauled trains.
Therefore, the engine rooms in locomotives are of particular importance, although the risks they pose depend heavily on the area of use and type of traction power. Specific requirements arising from environmental conditions must also be met by the individual subsystems. For example, locomotives equipped with FOGTEC systems can be found in the far north of Canada, where temperatures reach -40°C, as well as in desert regions of Africa with extremely high operating and idle temperatures.
However, they all have one thing in common: high reliability and availability, and low lifecycle costs.
