In October 2024, Chinese vehicle manufacturer Dongfeng Motors and Japanese car manufacturer Honda jointly revealed a new production facility in Wuhan City. The joint venture has thus secured a prime location in the Wuhan Economic Development Zone, a major hub for high-tech manufacturing in China. The factory is Honda’s first and only facility worldwide that is designed exclusively to produce electric vehicles.
Focus on electric mobility
The Dongfeng Honda building is in the Wuhan Economic Development Zone, which is often referred to as ‘China’s Silicon Valley’ in a broader sense. The economic and industrial zone specializes in the field of mobility, particularly in the manufacture of so-called New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). The term is most used in China and refers to vehicles with optimized energy consumption and reduced emissions that offer an alternative to combustion engines. Dongfeng Honda is commencing production of electric vehicles with an initial annual capacity of 120,000 vehicles, with plans to expand this to 256,000. All stages of production will be conducted at the same facility from start to finish. In addition to two new models from Honda’s Ye series, the first model of the new Lingxi electric car brand is also to be manufactured on site. The new factory is focusing on increased digitalization, both in its vehicles and in its production. Individual work areas, such as the stamping shop, rely on a fully automated warehouse. This reduces the logistics burden in particular.
Smart also for fire protection
As automation restructures work areas, protecting workers remains a key priority. This new smart factory concept therefore includes an intelligent fire protection concept that ensures the safety of people and technology. Working with flammable solvents, high temperatures and flying sparks poses an increased fire risk. Therefore, a reliable fire protection system is required to protect sensitive systems and machine technology.
Key areas such as the paint shop, press shop, welding shop and final assembly are protected by a high-pressure water mist fire protection system from FOGTEC. The high and efficient cooling effect of water mist and the low water consumption ensure that, in the event of an emergency, the fire can be extinguished quickly, and both the building and the technology suffer minimal damage. Simultaneously, the deployment of high-pressure water mist serves to mitigate the impact of heat and smoke, thereby facilitating the protection of employees.
The project involved the installation of over 90 valves and more than 1,400 nozzles in the factory. The system is operated by 7+1 high-performance pumps.
Heading towards the future with e-mobility
With its emphasis on digital manufacturing and primarily emission-free vehicle technologies, Dongfeng Honda is setting an example of how strategic industrial collaborations can establish new standards. The new smart factory is a prime example of a new generation of production plants in which digital processes and preventive protection systems work together to pave the way for safe electric mobility. A modern fire protection system is designed to safeguard both technical equipment and the personal safety of employees.
