Rolling stock depots represent extreme values in money terms. They are equally important to the society to ensure transport. Until the FOGTEC water mist system for bus and rolling stock depots was developed there was no effective solution available providing a sufficient level of protection. In many cases traditional systems in addition are so bulky and heavy that they can not be integrated into existing roof structures.
The FOGTEC water mist system for depots has been optimized and tested in full size fire tests. High pressure water mist nozzles are installed overhead the rolling stock to provide a highly efficient water mist above and between the trains, even when they are parked in direct vicinity to each other. The super fine FOGTE water mist droplets cool fire gases and absorb heat radiation effectively, thus preventing the roof structure from collapsing and the fire from jumping from one train to the next.
Since only a fraction of the water compared to traditional systems is being used, the water reservoir is small in size and easy to integrate.
FAQ – Fire Protection in Rolling Stock Depots
Can Sprinklers be an alternative?
Sprinklers are not recommended for the protection of rolling stock depots due to their much larger droplets, which are not providing a less efficient cooling and blocking of heat radiation.
Further, sprinklers may not activate at the right spot because of the rather simple glass bulb activation.Are there any other tested alternatives?
No, the FOGTEC water mist system is the only fire suppression system specifically and independently tested for depots.
How does the water mist protect the roof?
The very fine droplets are distributed by the specially designed FOGTEC nozzles to the area of the rolling stock underneath and to the upper parts of the building.
This creates a substantial cooling of the hot smoke. The temperatures to which the roof structure is exposed to is thereby significantly reduced.Is the weight of the FOGTEC water mist system a problem for the ceiling?
In most cases the very low weight of the small FOGTEC pipes of the system is not a problem to even very old roof structures.
