In many production areas nowadays Lithium Ion battaries play a role. This refers to the production of battery cells, battery modules or complete batteries of sizes as small as for e.g. laptops or as big as for cars and trucks. But also production areas in which the aforesaid are being part of a higher level production for such as tools, electrical vehicles, energy strorage systems, vacuum cleaners etc. are subject to new types of fire and explosion risks. For all of these areas FOGTEC offers within its LiSa-Pro concept custom designed and fire test proven solutions for protection. In many cases still untested sprinkler, gas or aerosol systems are installed in such areas. These are in many cases not suitable and may cause additional severe risks due to the extreme water damage in case of sprunkler and the lack of sufficent cooling, the impossibility to rapidly ventilate the affected area and the limited time of operation.
The FOGTEC’s LiSa-Pro concept for production areas uses special sensors to detect gases generated by a thermal runaway in an early phase. The respective alarm signal triggers immediately the venting of the affected room or area o avoid an explosive atmosphere. Only in case that the off gases ignite, detectors for heat or smoke will start the FOGTEC water mist system to provide fire control, cooling and reduction of toxic and corrosive smoke elements.
FAQ – Fire Protection in Batteries in Production
Why is gas detection so essential?
In many cases off gases are occurring substantially earlier than a fire in a BESS. Off gas detection often allows to act quickly and to avoid the worst.
Why not using a “dry” gas or aerosol system for fire suppression?
E.g. Nitrogen or chemical gases do not allow to substantially ventilate the protected space. Thus, clouds of highly explosive off gases will be the result.
Additionally FOGTEC water mist is heaving a much higher cooling effect.
Why not using a traditional sprinkler system for prodution areas containing lithium Ion battery cells?
Traditional sprinkler systems have not been widely tested for the hazard of Lithium Ion batteries in prodution areas. Additionally FOGTEC system have a much higher cooling effect in especially partly obstructed areas.
Why is the smoke washing effect of FOGTEC water mist so important?
Off gases and the smoke of Lithium Ion Batteries contain substantial amounts of hydrogen fluoride, heavy metals and acids. Any reduction in these can drastically reduce the risk for people and the damage to property.
