SUVEREN fire tests accomplished

Trauen, Germany

Further full scale fire tests within the SUVEREN research project were successfully completed. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. SUVEREN focuses on the safety of underground structures when using new energy sources such as batteries, gas and hydrogen. FOGTEC is part of a research consortium with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and the STUVA (Research Association for Tunnels and Transport Facilities e.V.).

Tests with traction batteries and CNG-jet flames were carried out with and without the use of a firefighting system. In addition, tests were carried out with a newly developed dummy vehicle as a so called spare fire load. In future series of tests, this will serve as a standardized fire load for better comparability. The large amount of test data is currently being evaluated scientifically by the research consortium. Initial results show, for example, that cooling with special water mist nozzles can prevent "thermal runaway" under certain conditions. During the experiments, special attention was also paid to testing and developing special detection technology.

Konrad Fischer Gallery

From a transformer station to an art gallery

The transformer station, built in 1905 by Franz Schwechten and Hans Heinrich Müller, is an impressive historical building. In the current renovation, the protection of historical monuments and the sensitive handling of the special aesthetics play an important role. The old transformer hall or the battery rooms with their grid cells, but also details such as the peeling paint on the doors in the stairwell need to be carefully renovated, restored and brought into a new context.

A state-of-the-art FOGTEC high-pressure water mist system is installed in order to guarantee modern fire protection and at the same time minimize structural modifications. By using particularly fine diameter pipes, the system is integrated into the building without affecting its character.
